Insomnia/Stress/Fatigue/Migraines

The everyday wear and tear of life, to some degree, affects us all. However, for some, this can present itself in problematic chronic and recurrent conditions such as fatigue, migraines and insomnia. Left untreated, these conditions promote a vicious cycle, reducing the quality of life.

The holistic approach to medicine means that TCM sees a link between the mind, body and spirit of an individual. Thus, physical problems can affect mental state, and emotions can have a bearing on physical health. This can be seen when a particular organ is out of balance, for example, spleen Qi deficiency can lead to tiredness, diarrhoea, poor concentration and a tendency to worry.

Headaches and Migraines: TCM differentiates the causes of headaches by observing the location of the pain and the type of pain. Throbbing pains at the temples can be associated with liver energy surging upwards to the head. Triggers for such a pain could be over-stimulating food such as citrus fruits, caffeine or alcohol. Dull aches at the base of the skull can however be attributed Blood deficiency of the Kidneys and Liver.

Insomnia: Insomnia can be caused by a variety of factors. Anxiety caused insomnia can be associated with excessive heat in the Heart, lack of nourishment, or Blood deficiency. Those with over-active minds unable to fall asleep or stay asleep for long may be suffering from liver stagnation or Yin deficiency.

Individuals prone to stress-related symptoms may find both acupuncture and herbal medicine helpful. The acupuncture as a stimulus therapy can help circulation, boost organ function by unblocking associated meridians. The treatment itself is very calming. Herbal medicine is more convenient and a more constant source organ nourishment and if needed, provides Yin/Yang balance.
